RealSimple.com suggests the following for place-card holders: use shears to cut twigs about 4 inches long. Bundle and tie them, tucking in name tags.
Continue the theme in an enlarged version by tying larger branches or strips of driftwood into large bundles (LEFT).
Or hang your stockings from a branch suspended over the mantel this year (RIGHT).
Add complementing accents with these branch themed candelabras from WestElm.com (RIGHT) - $29-$99. |

The Natural Look (Continued from Page 1)
Bringing nature in can be as simple as cutting a few twigs to size:
Then there’s an old stand-by: pinecones - yes, pinecones! You’re probably thinking, how cheesy but take a look at some modern spins on the old classic.
We suggest displaying pinecones in glass containers for an interesting mix of rough and smooth textures (see below). Another option is to combine them with holiday ornaments as in the example on the left.
Suspend pinecones on ribbons at the corner of a window to add interest (see below left) or simply use them to adorn your tree. Whether you use them in their natural state, or choose to glam them up with some paint or glitter, is up to you! Fortunately, you don’t have to go scavenging in the woods, here are some ready-to-use products:

Or add some twigs or branches to a glass vase of baubles (LEFT) for a natural twist on one of our favorites— this suggestion comes from HomeMadeSimple.com |
Better Homes and Gardens presented this stunning centerpiece (RIGHT) made from purple fountain grass, horsetail, and maiden grass held together by a copper pipe coupler in their November issue. See bhg.com for instructions. |
As for ornaments, we like Crate & Barrel’s Agate Ornaments (BELOW LEFT) - $19.80 for a set of four; as well as their Leaf with Acorn Ornaments (BELOW MIDDLE) - $17.85 for a set of three, available in different finishes in store. And an easy DIY option is to wrap colored string or twine around some recycled cardboard boxes, for an understated, natural-hued touch to your overall décor. |

Above, from left to right: Flocked Pine Cones Set $19.95 from Crate & Barrel; Metallic Pinecones Vase Filler $8 for set of 10 from Pottery Barn; and Mini Beaded Pinecone Ornaments from Crate & Barrel (above right) - $5.70 for set of six, available in white or gold. |

Alternatives to the Traditional Tree
Whilst a large, traditional tree is heaps of fun in a huge space, for many of us space is limited. Here are some alternative and fun ideas, many of which save on space.
If you have very little room to maneuver, consider using water-based craft paint (it comes off easily afterward!) to paint a tree on your wall. Another option is to outline your sketch with string lights. We like these examples from CB2.com: |

Or you could let your tree-shaped holiday card holder double up as a tree by attaching it somewhere there is room to pile presents beneath it. The Tree Holiday Card Holder pictured at right is available from Pottery Barn.
If you don’t like the wall idea, keep it small with these options (BELOW from left to right): |

Ornament Trees ($59.95 or $24.95) from Crate & Barrel; Ornament Tree ($30) from Pier 1; Rustic Felt Trees ($38-$48) from Garnet Hill; Homespun Felt Tree ($27) from Garnet Hill. |
If you have a little more room to spare, but still want to keep an eye on space, you could try one of the following options:
1. Hang ornaments on an existing potted tree (BELOW LEFT), example by CB2.com. 2. Hang ornaments on bare branches bunched to stand upright in a floor container (BELOW MIDDLE), examples by RestorationHardware.com. 3. Place a small to medium-sized tree on a small table (BELOW RIGHT) - this will leave room for placing gifts both on top of and underneath the table, example by BallardDesigns.com. |
And now for our favorite full sized tree idea: create a Peace Tree by using Pottery Barn’s peace ornaments, in varying sizes and colors (RIGHT). |
Hanukkah

We like Pottery Barn’s idea of grouping some Hanukkah taper candles with ribbon (FAR LEFT) - this kind of grouping can be used as an effective centerpiece or place setting decoration.
We’re also big fans of Crate & Barrel’s Malted Milk Balls (LEFT) which double up as an attractive decorative item and a delicious treat! |
For a different take on the traditional Hanukkah menorah (called a hanukkiah), group together nine single tea light or votive holders - you could line up nine of the same size and shape, or mix it up, like Crate & Barrel have done here (RIGHT).
If you want something far more unique, even wacky, check out the selection of unusual menorahs at PopJudaica.com - we liked the vespa scooter version (FAR RIGHT). |
Alternatives to the Traditional Wreath and Garland
Tired of the same holly and greenery circles seen everywhere? Here are some wreaths with a difference: |

From left to right: Gilt Wood Wreath $49.95 from Crate & Barrel; Pomegranate Berry Wreaths $47.99-$89.99 from Restoration Hardware; Feather Wreath $39.95 available in a large selection of colors from FeatherWreaths.com |
Peacock Feather Wreath (FAR LEFT) $26.99 from ChristmasInPrescott.com. We suggest that you carry this fabulous theme throughout your home - see the wonderful table setting example by Better Homes and Gardens (MIDDLE LEFT), where they use the wreath as part of the table centerpiece. Then finish it off with these amazing peacock ornaments (LEFT) $4.95-$11.95 from Pier1. |
Pottery Barn have a selection of live wreaths, including boxwood, cypress and magnolia (see examples at left). We like their idea of personalizing a plain wreath with holiday cards, photographs or even watches. |
Garnet Hill has brought out some novel advent calendars that double up as decorative garlands: Hats and Mittens Advent Calendar (RIGHT) - $78 (or make your own from old hats and mittens bought for a song from a thrift store!); and Buckets of Joy Advent Calendar (FAR RIGHT) - $68 (again, with the possibility of making your own version with craft store supplies). |

Multicolor Metal Dragonfly Ornaments $11.85 for a set of three from Crate & Barrel. 4. Crocheted Octopus $16 from JaysonHomeAndGarden.com. |
Alternatives to the Traditional Stocking
